FAQ
Is Ascend only a martial arts school?
No! Whilst we're extremely passionate about martial arts at Ascend, our staff are also fully qualified gym instructors and personal trainers! We offer a range of fitness circuits and HIIT classes 5 days a week. Think of a boot camp in a fully equipped, air conditioned gym! We also offer personal training to help you get into the best shape of your life. You can check out more about our fitness services here.
Is martial arts right for me?
Martial arts is for everyone! Not only will you learn valuable skills that could save your life one day, martial arts has a host of benefits which include building strength, endurance, flexibility and physical capability, as well as developing confidence that will translate into all aspects of your life.
Which martial art should I choose?
There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to choosing a martial arts discipline to follow. At Ascend we pride ourselves on having four primary styles/disciplines that members can train in, and the best part is that our members have access to all of them as part of their membership. As a member at Ascend, you can train in any discipline you want without being locked into any single one, so that you can trial each one and find out which one you enjoy the most.
Do I need to get fit before I start martial arts?
Definitely not! Often people think that they can't start martial arts without first getting into shape, when in reality, starting martial arts is one of the best ways to get fit and healthy. Our instructors will make sure that you are getting the most out of your training experience, regardless of your current fitness level, and help you to achieve your goals no matter where you start and where you want to be.
Is martial arts dangerous?
Martial arts is inherently dangerous as you are typically using your body to either strike, throw, grapple or lift, as well as practicing defensive techniques with drill partners. However, don't let this deter you as Ascend prides itself on prioritising safety and respect in all of our disciplines. We do everything we can to minimise the risk of injury to our members through thorough explanation and demonstration of every technique we teach, and we have a zero tolerance policy for individuals who put others at risk.
Do I need to spar or fight to train at Ascend?
Definitely not! Many people think that they will be forced to fight when they join a martial arts club, but that is absolutely not the case. Whilst some people may choose to compete on their own accord, which Ascend can help with, you will never be required to fight. Sparring is an optional cooperative activity run separately to our main classes which is for the sole purpose of practicing techniques in a controlled environment. Sparring is not required under normal circumstances when training at Ascend, however it is required for some higher gradings. These gradings will be several years down the track for any beginners, however.
