On Sunday, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu team from Ascend Martial Arts travelled down from Tweed Heads to Port Macquarie, competing in the AFBJJ Port Macquarie Open. Naomi, Michael & Ricco all put their martial arts and Jiu Jitsu skills on display, and came out with 3 Gold medals, 2 Silver medals and a 2nd place trophy for best no gi team of the day.

Naomi had one roll in both gi and no gi on the day, and came out on top for both. Naomi demonstrated her immense progress in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu through her dominating top game. Whilst Naomi's opponent had a very strong guard, Naomi was able to quickly pass and start attacking from top positions. Despite getting very close to submitting her opponent via rear naked choke, Naomi just ran out of time before she was able to secure the submission. Both of Naomi's wins came by way of points.

Michael competed in both Under 91 kg and Open Weight on Sunday, and secured a Gold and Silver medal in each respectively. Michael's first match was secured narrowly by a last second side control which earned him enough points to win in an otherwise even match. In the second roll, Michael completed and Uchi Mata to take his opponent down, before quickly securing the back and submitting his opponent with a rear naked choke. In the Open Weight, Michael managed to win his first match on points, almost earning a submission via arm bar before the clock ran out. In the second match, Michael was caught in a gogoplata from guard and subsequently submitted.

Ricco was unable to find an opponent at his weight, but always up for the challenge, took on an opponent that was over 10 kg heavier and 2 years older. Ricco started looking for a throw, however was eventually taken down to the ground. Ricco made bold attempts to regain his position, however became trapped and was eventually submitted via a head and arm choke. Whilst not the result he was hoping for, it was extraordinarily commendable of Ricco to step up in weight and age for this match.
