Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, or BJJ, is taught by myself, Grant Brechney, at Ascend Martial Arts. Over the past few decades, BJJ has sky rocketed in popularity, and that's for good reason! It's truly an amazing martial art for fitness, socialising, competition and self-defense. If you haven't studied BJJ yet, but are considering it, you might be interested to hear that there are many different styles, commonly referred to as "games" within BJJ, that will affect your learning when choosing where to train.

As a BJJ practitioner advances through the grades, they inevitably develop their own style or game. This style is usually influenced by a number of factors including your instructors. For example, the shape of your body might give you advantages with certain techniques, and disadvantages with others. Age can be a factor, as well as your goals.

I remember distinctly why I started BJJ, and that was to be able to compete in mixed martial arts (MMA) as a cage fighter. Because this was my goal, it meant that as I progressed in my learning in BJJ, I had to focus on techniques and strategies within the martial art that would be effective in MMA. This meant a strong understanding of takedowns and takedown defense, as well as controlling someone from top positions in order to gain the advantage for using ground and pound (strikes from ground positions) and submissions in order to win my matches.

So, what is different about learning BJJ at Ascend Martial Arts? In our Jiu Jitsu classes I incorporate a lot of wrestling techniques and principles into what I teach. Don't get me wrong, I like to ensure that all my students receive a comprehensive and well-rounded instruction in learning Jiu Jitsu. There won't be a position that you aren't comfortable fighting from after a few years in my classes, but I strongly believe that the style of Jiu Jitsu I have developed is the best for ensuring success in self-defense situations, MMA, even sport Jiu Jitsu competition! No matter your goals for learning, I'm confident I can show you the way to developing your own personal BJJ game.
