What to Expect at Your First Class at Ascend

Having the desire to start something new is great, but the first obstacle many people encounter is anxiousness about going to a new place and not knowing what to do or having no idea what might be expected of them if they do go! It's no wonder that so many of us prefer to stay in our comfort zones rather than put ourselves out there. So, we wanted to share with you exactly what you can expect when you come to your first class at Ascend Martial Arts to alleviate some misconceptions that might be holding you back. Read on to learn more.

You Don't Need to be Fit to Start Practicing Martial Arts!

It's true that practicing martial arts is amazing for your fitness, but so many people get embarrassed about their fitness level and don't want to come to training until they get fit first. Training in martial arts is actually one of the most engaging and fun ways you can work on your fitness goals. You'll always be moving your body in ways that will burn those calories fast and you'll be learning a new skill too! We even have tailored fitness classes on our timetable for anyone who wants to improve all aspects of their fitness or conditioning.

It Doesn't Matter What Skill Level You Are, All of Our Classes Are Designed With You in Mind!

One of the most common barriers to starting martial arts is concern about "not knowing what to do" and "not wanting to hold other people in the class back" because they haven't trained in martial arts before. We want to reassure you that all of our classes cater to both complete beginners, and those with more advanced knowledge of martial arts. You might feel a bit silly as you begin to learn how to gain control over the movements of your body when first starting, but everybody goes through this phase! You don't look silly to everyone else, because everyone else has been a beginner before. We're just happy you're on the mats with us trying to improve yourself. Ultimately, that's what we're all here to do and our other students will help you along the way!

You're Not Going to Get Punched in The Face!

The number one concern people raise when talking about starting martial arts is not wanting to get hit, so if you feel this way, you're not alone. If you're worried that you'll be forced into sparring matches where someone experienced will pound on you until you want to run out the door screaming, please know that this will never happen to you at Ascend. Each of our classes in Muay Thai, Karate, BJJ, and MMA are designed for getting fit, staying safe, and learning effective martial arts skills. We have specific slots in our timetable dedicated to sparring and rolling (BJJ sparring). You won't be pushed into doing any sparring until you and your instructor feels you're ready, and even then, you'll begin by sparring instructors who are able to start very slow with you and show you how to adapt your techniques against a live opponent in a very safe way.
